So it tickled me pink when Chris Buddle at Arthropod Ecology posted on his favourite spider species… […]

A truly wonderful story by Chris Buddle about his rediscovery of natural history information by some outstanding biologists that has been overlooked. It comes with beautiful images of ant-mimic salticid […]

Wine… indeed! Wallace would approve, I’m sure.

The Peckhams made great descriptions. I have only come across one ant-mimicking jumping spider before (well one that I recognized at the time), but it also displayed the frantic, seemingly random movement of an ant. Just another reason to love a jumper.

Oh, and it probably goes pretty well with a glass of wine, too!

Quite a few years ago I did an assignment with students in an Entomology class in which they were given a passage from an old (pre 1900) publication about an insect, and they were required to ‘make it be like it was from the 2000s’. It was a fascinating exercise, especially because it exposed us all to the beauty of that ‘engaging style’, as you mention. It would be nice to see a return to eloquence!!

The BHL is an incredible resource.

And particularly interesting in terms of our earlier discussion on Twitter.

I’ve been reading Wallace’s “Malay Archipelago” for awhile now. It’s like a case of fine wine, actually. Once a week or so I pop the cork off of the next chapter and read through it. I think it should be required reading for all biology undergrads, actually.
